Alice, Exiting Wonderland is a darkly funny chapbook of ten prose poems that pits a vulnerable, cat-loving Alice against a dark architect who engineers her descent into madness. A surrealist, gothic blend of saccharides and strychnine, with a little pepper thrown in for good measure. Featuring chapters, such as “The Taxidermy of a Coming of Age,” “The Perils of Too Much Cake,” and “The Be-Riddled Etiquette of Attending Infinite Tea Parties.”

It was strange to see the cautionary tale walk into the room dressed up as a coming of age. The reservations had been cancelled. Invitations torn up and tossed in the trash. Instead, He’d found an old abandoned rabbit hole and threw her in. Her nubile flesh was easy to peel off. The paper-mâché wings proved more difficult.
He’s given her the wrong station, where trains depart but never arrive. So now she will miss the caucus race. On the platform display, an ominous message: “You mustn’t speak French to the mouse.”
She wondered if it hadn’t been the tea party itself that had driven him mad. But she never got the chance to ask. You cannot join a tea party of the insane; they only invite the absurd.
